What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth root that’s anchored to your jaw bone. They’re the most successful treatment for replacing missing teeth with permanent restorations that feel, look, and function like real teeth.
Made from medical-grade titanium or titanium, a dental implant is a screw that naturally fuses with your jaw bone through osseointegration. The top of the implant is the abutment, which is where a permanent restoration, like a crown, bridge, or denture is secured to the implant.
Benefits of Dental Implants in Sunshine Coast
You Can Chew and Speak Comfortably
Missing teeth do more than affect your appearance – they also make it harder to chew food and speak comfortably. Even if you get dentures, they can slip and feel strange in your mouth. Getting dental implants will help restore the functionality of your teeth, allowing you to speak, bite, and chew properly without limitations.
You Feel Confident
It’s no secret that missing teeth can take a toll on your appearance. Wide gaps between your teeth can make you self-conscious when you speak or smile. Dental implants look just like your natural teeth, and with a full set of teeth, you’ll be able to smile with confidence.
They Last a Long Time
A major advantage of dental implants is that they offer a permanent solution for tooth replacement unlike unsecured dentures. They’re made with medical-grade titanium, which is highly biocompatible. With the right care, implants can last several years or even a lifetime.
Prevent Misalignment
Missing teeth can affect the alignment of surrounding teeth by causing them to shift into empty spaces. A dental implant acts as an anchor, ensuring the surrounding teeth remain in their respective positions. Poor alignment can affect your bite and oral health as well.
They Preserve Your Facial Structure
When you speak or chew food, it stimulates bone growth in the jaw. With missing teeth, your jaw bone doesn’t get adequate stimulation, which can lead to bone loss. Dental implants help provide necessary stimulation to preserve the density of your jawbone. This, in turn, preserves your facial structure.
What To Expect From The Dental Implant Procedure
Initial Consultation and Examination
Before the surgery, you’ll undergo an assessment to determine your eligibility for dental implants. At the initial consultation, one of our experienced Sunshine Coast dentists will walk you through different treatment options.
Pre-Treatment
Certain factors can affect your eligibility for dental implants, such as low jaw bone density and gum disease. In either case, you’ll need to undergo bone grafting surgery or gum disease treatment before the implant surgery. You may also need to get a damaged tooth extracted before undergoing implant surgery.
Implant Placement
During the surgery, your dentist will make a minor incision in your gum line and fix the implant. Since you’ll receive a local anesthetic before the procedure, you’ll only experience minor discomfort. It will take about 3 months for the implant to fuse with your jaw bone. During this time, you’ll receive a temporary crown to cover the implant site.
Abutment and Permanent Restoration
Once the implant fully integrates with your jaw bone, the abutment is secured to the top. Then, your dentist attaches a crown, bridge, or denture to the abutment so it’s fixed in place.

FAQs
Am I eligible for dental implants?
Most people are eligible for dental implants as long as your gums are in good health and you have adequate bone density. Factors that affect your eligibility include conditions that affect your bones’ ability to heal, gum disease, and bone loss. In some cases, pre-treatment may be required before the surgery, so we recommend booking a consultation to know your options.
How much do dental implants cost?
The cost can vary widely depending on the number of implants required and the type of restoration you need. You can expect to pay more if you have several missing teeth that need replacing. Call our Sunshine Coast cosmetic dental clinic for more information.
Can I get dental implants in one visit?
If you need to get a tooth extracted, same-day implants allow you to get implants fitted on the same day. Instead of waiting for the jawbone to heal before getting a crown, you get a temporary crown. Schedule a complimentary consultation at our Sunshine Coast dental clinic to determine your eligibility for same-day implants.
What if I have more than one missing tooth?
If you have two or more missing teeth, other available options include bridges, partial dentures, and full dentures. These will be secured onto two to eight implants, depending on the number of missing teeth.
Will people be able to tell that my tooth is artificial?
No, our Sunshine Coast cosmetic dental clinic customises crowns, bridges, and dentures to ensure a perfect match with your natural teeth. Dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth.
Will there be any dietary restrictions after getting dental implants?
In the weeks after your implant surgery, you’ll need to stick to soft foods and liquids to avoid putting pressure on the implant site. You’ll need to avoid crunchy, sticky, spicy, and tough foods to ensure that it heals properly. Once the implant site heals fully, you can go back to eating all your favourite foods.
